Start with what is strong

Asset-Based Community Development begins with the strengths, skills, relationships and passions that already exist within our communities.

Instead of starting with problems or deficiencies, ABCD helps people recognise what they have, connect with others and turn what matters to them into practical action.

It is based on a simple belief: every person has something to contribute, and every community has assets on which it can build.

Communities are rich in associations, including formal organisations, informal groups, friendships and local networks.

Connections build community power by bringing people, ideas and resources together.

Citizens should be at the centre, with organisations and services supporting community-led action rather than taking it over.

How ABCD underpins our approach

ABCD provides the foundation for the CDA Approach. We begin with what matters to local people, recognise the strengths and assets already present, build connections and support communities to take action.

Where something is missing, we help identify and bring in the right external support. This might come from public services, voluntary organisations, businesses or funders, but it should strengthen community action rather than replace it.

The CDA Approach is informed by ABCD and extends it through collaboration across sectors, practical support, barrier removal and a long-term focus on healthy, sustainable and connected communities.
